I slutet av 1970-talet grundade Maathai orga-. Wangari Maathai utsågs 2009 till hedersmedlem i föreningen. Nu finns hon tyvärr inte längre med oss. Vila i frid, Wangari. 2004 blev miljöaktivisten Wangari Maathai den första afrikanska kvinnan som mottog Nobels fredspris. 2011 avled hon i cancer.

2021-03-28 Wangari Maathai (1940–2011), the first woman to obtain a PhD in East and Central Africa, was a scholar, and an environmental and human rights activist. In 1977, she founded the Green Belt Movement, a non-governmental organization, which encourages women to plant trees to combat deforestation and environmental degradation. Wangari Maathai died of cancer in September 2011 but her legacy continues in many projects around the world, so for example in the Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign. Maathai was active in the National Council of Women of Kenya from 1976 and was its chairwoman, 1981-87.
